The Department of Housing and Economic Development is responsible for:
- Planning and enforcing policies to improve the city's health, safety and quality of life
- Attracting industrial, commercial and economic development
- Analyzing available sites and identifying sites suitable for proposed development
- Assisting in securing financing, coordinating city services for the site and functioning as chief zoning officer
- Implementing the Martin Luther King (MLK) Drive Redevelopment Plan through monitoring and coordinating grant applications and funding allocations
- Ensuring compliance with City health, safety and quality of life standards
- Helping to create self-sustaining neighborhoods by administering and enforicing property maintenance codes and ordinances
