JERSEY CITY—Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham and world re-known sculptor Zurag Tsereteli will unveil a replica of the city’s permanent “September 11th” Memorial during ceremonies, beginning 8:30 a.m. September 11, 2003, at the foot of Grand Street.
Cunningham, on behalf of Jersey City, has accepted the most precious offering of Zurab Tsereteli, esteemed sculptor and president of the Russian Academy of Art, the city of Moscow and the government of Russia for its gift that is believed to be the first memorial established for all the victims of “9-11".
The sculpture, which was accepted by Cunningham and members of the Jersey City 9-11 Memorial Committee, will measure 30 meters tall and will be placed at the Jersey City Waterfront. The offering, which will face Ground Zero across the Hudson River, will be funded by the Russian Federation. It was one of dozens of proposals submitted to the 9-11 memorial committee during the last two years for a permanent memorial.
“This offering from such an esteemed artist and the Russian government demonstrates how the entire world was affected that horrific day,” Cunningham said. “Jersey City was so close to the devastation of that day, both in proximity and in grief that was felt. It has been our goal to establish a monument that would not only honor all those who were lost but also become a national destination where all would want to stop and reflect. This will be that type of memorial.”
A large-model of the proposed memorial sculpture will be unveiled during the ceremony for photographs. Cunningham and Trereteli will be available for comments and questions. Tsereteli, who is also a Good Will Ambassador for UNESCO, has works displayed in various corners of the globe, including a permanent piece at the United Nations Building in New York.
Following the day ceremonies, which will take place adjacent to the temporary memorial established last year, an evening candlelight vigil is scheduled for the Waterfront. These participating in the vigil are asked to meet at the rear of City Hall, 280 Grove Street, at 7 p.m., where upon the procession will walk three blocks to the waterfront for a brief ceremony. The vigil will coincide with New York’s towers of light display.
Zurab’s rendering and the other proposals submitted to the Memorial Committee will be on display in the city Main Branch of its public library from September 11, 2003 to the end of the month.///
