JERSEY CITY - Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will present the current Miss Universe, Amelia
Vega, with a key to the City during a ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2004 in City Hall
Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street.
Miss Vega is the first Miss Universe to hail from the Dominican Republic and during the
ceremony will be named an honorary citizen of Jersey City.
Mayor Cunningham chose to recognize Miss Vega because of her stature and prominence in the
Dominican community, which is one of the city's fastest growing, and for her commitment to
world causes and humanitarian aid.
"I am pleased to be welcoming Miss Universe to Jersey City," Cunningham said. "She represents
a great people and it is an honor to have her visit us and meet the citizens of Jersey City."
During the ceremony - which will include cultural musical and dance performances - there will
also be an unveiling of a portrait of Miss Universe done by internationally renowned Dominican
artist, Henry Martinez.
Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony./////
