JERSEY CITY - A recent study conducted by the American Medical Podiatric
Association in conjunction with Prevention magazine ranked Jersey City as one of the
top 12 walking cities in the United States.
The study took into account such factors as population, percentage of people who walk to
work, air quality index, crime rate, pedestrian deaths, APMA members practicing in the
area, the number of walking and bike paths, the number of parks, the number of
recreation and fitness stores and the number of health clubs.
"This is a great achievement for Jersey City, because it indicates that people are getting
out and either walking to work or walking to the various modes of public transportation,"
Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham said. "Jersey City is home to Liberty State Park, the
walkways on the Hudson River and so many sites and attractions for the residents and
visitors."
According to a release from the APMA, the rate at which obesity and poor physical
health is quickly catching up to tobacco as the leading cause of death in American, and
the association and Prevention want to help reverse these trends by encouraging
Americans to incorporate walking into their lives. Founded in 1912, the American
Podiatric Medical Association is the leading professional society for foot and ankle
specialists in the nation, with more than 12,000 members.
"I am proud that the people of Jersey City are taking their health seriously and making
the effort to walk when possible," Cunningham said.
The APMA and Prevention broke the nation into four geographical sections for their
study: the Northeast, the Midwest, the South and the West, with three cities being named
in each category. Jersey City was named as one of the best Walking Cities in the
Northeast, along with New York City and Philadelphia.
The results of the joint study will appear in the April edition of Prevention, America's
leading health magazine, and the 11th largest magazine in the nation, has been providing
readers with the most current information on health, fitness, nutrition, and healthy, active
lifestyles since 1950./////
