JERSEY CITY- Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will break ground on the new state-of-
the-art school for the blind being built by St. Joseph's School for the Blind at 10:30 a.m.
on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 761 Summit Avenue.
The only school of its kind in New Jersey, St. Joseph's provides an array of educational
options for students with vision impairments and those who have additional disabilities
and has done so since it was founded by The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in 1891.
The new school will be a continuation of the excellent services already in place by the
school, which also provides a living environment for visually impaired children at the
Concordia House. The new educational facility will be a two-story building built adjacent
to the Concordia House, which is surrounded by gardens and play areas for the students.
"This is a great example of how Jersey City is providing for all of its residents," Mayor
Cunningham said. "It is so important that our children, all of our children, receive the
education they need to succeed in this world. The teachers and administrators at St.
Joseph are making sure of that."
