JERSEY CITY - Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will receive an award from the American
Podiatric Medical Association and the Deputy Editor of Prevention Magazine naming
Jersey City one of the nation's "Best Walking Cities" during a ceremony at 11 a.m. on
Monday, April 5, 2004 in City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street.
Dr. Nancy Kaplan, DPM, and Prevention Magazine's Deputy Editor Amy O'Connor, will
present the award to Mayor Cunningham, whose city was ranked one of the three best
walking cities in the Northeast, along with New York City and Philadelphia.
The study, released in the April edition of the health magazine, took into account such
factors as population, percentage of people who walk to work, air quality index, crime
rate, pedestrian deaths, APMA members practicing in the area, the number of walking
and bike paths, the number of parks, the number of recreation and fitness stores and the
number of health clubs.
"This is a great achievement for Jersey City, because it indicates that people are getting
out and either walking to work or walking to the various modes of public transportation,"
Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham said. "Jersey City is home to Liberty State Park, the
walkways on the Hudson River and so many sites and attractions for the residents and
visitors."////
