Mayor Cunningham to Celebrate 30th Anniversary of CDBG Program
HUD to Celebrate Community Development with Jersey City

JERSEY CITY - Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will celebrate the 30`x' anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant program with New Jersey representatives of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development at an 8:30 a.m. breakfast on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at the Mary McLeod Bethune Community Center, 140 Martin Luther King Drive.

In addition to the Director of the New Jersey State Field Office for HUD, Diane Johnson, several organizations and agencies that have participated in and benefited from CDBG grants will be on hand to receive proclamations from Mayor Cunningham. Several city directors, HUD division directors, local clergy and community leaders will also attend the anniversary breakfast.

"This is a historic milestone for the CDBG program both in Jersey City and the nation," Cunningham said. "Because of President Ford and the Housing Act of 1974, we have this very important program which helps improve neighborhoods by creating housing, social service and educational programs, and other initiatives that rehabilitate either buildings or people."

The CDBG program, administered through HUD, is the principal federal program providing funding grants to states, cities, and towns to devise neighborhood approaches that will improve the physical, economic and social conditions in communities.

"And Jersey City has made such impressive leaps because of this program," Cunningham added. "Areas that were blighted now house low- and moderate-income homes or centers that provide food, child care and other services to the community."
