JERSEY CITY - Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham announced that he has voiced his concerns to state and federal law enforcement officials regarding troubling voter intimidation tactics taken recently against potential voters and supporters of Steven Fulop, candidate for Congress in the 13th District, by political operatives representing Robert Menendez.

Cunningham announced that he spoke directly with U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie’s office and the office of State Attorney General Peter Harvey after Jersey City Police began its investigation of a group of men who acted as police officers while questioning people who signed petitions in support of Fulop’s candidacy. These phony cops showed up at petition signer’s homes during evening hours while wearing police hats and shirts with police emblems.

“This is completely reprehensible,” Cunningham said. “It’s important that all law enforcement officials are aware of the degree of violations upon people’s Civil Rights that has occurred. I’m calling for this kind of behavior to be thoroughly investigated and anyone responsible should be prosecuted.”

Spokesperson for Menendez admitte d that their representatives did go to the homes and question those whom signed petitions for Fulop. Victims of the intimidation said the questioners refused to identify themselves and showed at their homes demanding to speak with them between 8:30 pm and 9 p.m.

“If there is a question about someone’s signature or their eligibility to vote, that should be an issue for the Board of elections, not a bunch of goons showing up at your home in the middle of the night,” Cunningham said.

Fulop, 27, took a leave of absence from his position at Goldman Sachs following the attacks on America September 11, 2001 to enlist in the U.S. Marine corps. He served in Iraq during the war before returning home to throw his hat in the political arena.

“I wanted to serve my country because I believe in our freedoms. I’m challenging Robert Menendez to stop the political shenanigans and the intimidation tactics. Is he afraid of a fair fight,” Fulop said.///
