Jersey City - Mayor L. Harvey Smith will commemorate United Nations Day Sunday, October 24, 2004 during a brief ceremony and flag raising at City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street.
Jersey City is perhaps the most ethnically and culturally diverse community in the country. Over 50 languages and another 100 distinct dialects are spoken within our school system. Through out the year the City celebrates different ethnicities and cultures with festivals and other events.
United Nations Day's purpose is to bring all 81 nations that are part of the United Nations together and reinforce the message that in being united is a step closer to a better world. The ultimate goal is to inform the people of the world as to the aims, purposes, and achievements of the United Nations.
Since October 24, 1945 The United Nations has pledged to continue to fight together against axis powers and build world peace. It is with this mentality that all cultures and religions are brought together.
"Jersey City is in many ways a microcosm of what the United Nations stands for," Smith said. ///
