2004 TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORTS UNDERWAY IN JERSEY CITY
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY WITH MAYOR JERRAMIAH HEALY & RELIEF ORGANIZERS

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy will reach out to local Indian and Sri Lankan community leaders and healthcare workers to discuss Jersey City’s efforts in light of the recent massive earthquake-triggered tsunami that devastated the southern coast of Asia and reaching as far as East Africa.

On Thursday, December 30, Mayor Healy will meet with community leaders at 10:30 a.m. at City Hall. A press conference and photo opportunity will follow at 11 a.m. in the Council Chambers, where community leaders will inform the public of all the avenues available to Jersey City residents who wish to support the relief effort.

WHAT: Press conference and photo opportunity with Mayor Jerramiah Healy, local Indian and Sri Lankan community leaders, and the Hudson-Bergen Chapter of the American Red Cross to discuss relief efforts for countries devastated by the recent tsunami disaster.

WHY: On Sunday, December 26, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered powerful tsunamis that engulfed Asia’s southern coast, resulting in a death toll of over 50,000 and rising. Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia were the most heavily hit by this natural disaster. The most pressing needs for the countries affected are purified water and medical supplies to prevent the spread of disease. Jersey City has a thriving Asian population that is greatly affected by this tragedy. According to the 2000 Census, 16% of Jersey City’s population is comprised of Asians.

The Jersey City Physicians & Healthcare Workers’ Coalition for 2004 Tsunami Disaster Relief is a coalition formed to collect medicine, medical supplies, and aid for the tsunami disaster relief effort. Requested medical supplies include: antibiotics, cough medicine, bandages, syringes, walkers, wheelchairs, IV bags, canes, etc. Medical donations may be sent to Tsunami Relief c/o Dr. Vijaya Desai, 145 St. Paul’s Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07306.
