JERSEY CITY-Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will dedicate a 107-year-old finial
as permanent display in the first-floor City Hall rotunda, during 2 p.m. ceremonies
Monday, June 23, 2003 at City Hall.
The finial, one of five original designs that on the five 40-feet tail bell-shaped
cupola domes atop City Hall when construction completed in 1996, will be encased
for viewing in the first floor rotunda. A fire in City Hall in 1979 damaged the roof
and domes and most of the finials.
Finials are often compared to the "cherry on top of the cake."
"This is a tremendous piece of history, which has survived the fire of 1979 and all these years
in storage," Cunningham said. "Now on permanent display in our rotunda, visitors to City Hall
can take a brief walk through history and get a glimpse of one of the most important structures
in the city's history."
Local historians and preservationists are expected to be on hand during the ceremony to answer
questions.///
