They say that "great crisis produce great men, and great deeds of courage." Well, we have no shortage of brave men in the Jersey City Fire Department. They demonstrated their bravery when our nation was attacked on 9-11, and they continue to do so every day when they respond to a fire or emergency.

But this year we are especially proud of the first two "women" will take their place in our fire-houses and in history. Connie Zapella and Maureen Nally are currently in the fire academy and are among the 50 new firefighters who will join the ranks of Jersey City's Bravest.

And there is more good news for Jersey City's Bravest, the department has begun the much-needed process of upgrading its fire equipment.

This year we have put a new Heavy Rescue Truck into service, and we have four new pumper trucks and a new ladder truck which will go into service next week. Our firefighters are getting the equipment they need to meet the challenge of keeping our city safe.

We opened a new state of the art firehouse on Palisade Avenue. Later this year we will begin the refurbishing of the firehouse located at 2 Bergen Avenue, and two more new firehouses in the southern part of Jersey City are on the drawing board.

Later this year two additional ladder trucks and two additional pumper trucks will also be put on line into service as we continue the modernization of our fire department.

My administration will continue to meet its commitment to make Jersey City's fire services second to none in New Jersey.
