Everyday our city's police officers are fighting crime on our streets and making Jersey City a safer place. But in order to protect our children from the perils of the street, we must also give them alternatives.
One such alternative is recreation. Not only does recreation provide youth with positive outlets for their energy, it also helps them foster mental and physical strength and teamwork skills. And making Jersey City a fun place to grow up is one of the top priorities of my administration.
That's why the Jersey City Armory is being transformed into a full-time recreation center through a Grant from the State Department of Human Services. We can now use the Armory rent free which saves Jersey City $250,000 dollars a year.
We have also received a commitment from the "Casino Reinvestment Fund" to put a stateof-the-art indoor track in the Armory for our young athletes.
And investing in our children is paying dividends.
Our Jersey City Recreation Track Team won the grammar boys relays AAU title and participated in the regional championship in Albany NY, and the JC Recreation Trampoline Team recently hosted the NJ State Championship at the JC Armory.
This past winter over 1,000 children participated in our winter Basketball league which was run in partnership with the Boys Club, and this Summer we will have up to 2,000 children enrolled in our 14 Summer Camps sites.
However, I am especially proud to say our Jersey City Recreation Liberty HS Cheerleading team won the National Title in Disney World this past April. And the coach Christy Sigroda and several members of the team are with us tonight. (Introduce)
And adults need recreation too. We are continuing to provide family activities and events.
This winter at our Ice Rink at Pershing Field more than 100 people participated in our open skating program, and plans are nearly completed for this rink to become a skateboard park for our "Youth Skates" program. A 20-ramp skateboarding park is scheduled to open shortly after the July Fourth holiday.
And finally, last September, Jersey City held its first televised boxing event in decades at the Armory, and it was shown live on ESPN. In April we hosted the New Jersey Golden Gloves tournament. These competitions drew over 1,000 fans. We also had great success with the Professional Wrestling match held at Pershing Field with an all star card of wrestling big names with more than 1000 fans attending.
