State of the City – Midterm Address
Seniors

Our Golden Years should be the best years of our lives, a time to look back with pride on your many accomplishments.

It is the time that should simply be enjoyed. Whether it's through outings with friends, days spent with the grandchildren, or finally trying out a new hobby or activity.

In my effort to make Jersey City a better place to live, I've paid special attention to the needs of our senior citizens. My administration is bringing seniors the resources and recreation they deserve.

Every day, our Office of Senior Affairs receives calls requesting information or assistance. Last year we helped over 7,500 seniors.

Senior Affairs also supervises two full-day senior sites where up to 100 seniors come each day. There they receive hot meals, and participate in a wide range of activities such as dancing, arts and crafts.

Four lunch sites throughout the city serve approximately 50,000 meals per year. We also fund a Meals on Wheels Program where 700 homebound seniors receive a hot meals every day.

To meet the health needs of our seniors, we hold an Annual Health Fair in the fall and distribute free flu shots to hundreds of seniors throughout the city.

For entertainment, Senior Affairs provides transportation to and from local movie theaters, and takes 650 seniors from all over the city grocery shopping on a monthly basis thereby allowing over 18,000 seniors to get the food they need.

And each month, over 200 seniors attend special outings sponsored by the city, like tomorrow's Senior Picnic at Liberty State Park which I encourage all seniors here tonight to attend. Last year, over 2,000 seniors attended the picnic -- so don't miss it!

Last summer we secured funding for 1,000 seniors to receive $20 vouchers redeemable at several Farmers Markets throughout the county. We also distribute over 5,000 Discount Shopping Coupon booklets each year.

Representing all of our seniors tonight, I'd like to introduce Tess Brady who was recently honored as "Senior of the Year."
