JERSEY CITY Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham will kick-off the installation of a new
$3.2 million street signage program at the corner of Caven Point Road and Chapel
Avenue at 4:30p.m. on Thursday, Oct.30, 2003.
A private-public partnership, Destination: Jersey City will involve the installation of
more than 500 13-foot tall, three-dimensional signs throughout the city the largest
urban directional signage program completed at one time.
"This is a great program because it helps residents and tourists alike navigate themselves
around Jersey City," Mayor Cunningham said. "And it does not focus on just on the
waterfront, but includes all the many places and neighborhoods that make Jersey City so
unique."
Destination: Jersey City is a partnership between the City and private enterprises such as
transportation providers, area businesses, and academic and cultural institutions. There
are more than 30 partners including the Liberty Science Center, New Jersey City
University, the Jersey City Museum and the St. Peter's College.
The sign is the Destination: Jersey City logo, which is the Statue of Liberty's crown
behind the letters SC. Mayor Cunningham also noted that the program comes at no cost to
taxpayers, as it is funded through a NJ Department of Transportation grant.
