JERSEY CITY-In an effort to include more inner-city businesses in the city's Urban
Enterprise Zone, mapping of the commercial districts was recently expanded throughout
the city as part of the ongoing neighborhood revitalization.
The expansion, which will make 455 new businesses eligible to join the program, was
developed by the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation UEZ Program and
approved earlier this month by the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority.
"Programs like the Urban Enterprise Zone need to be more accessible to small
businesses," Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham said. "By revamping the UEZ map we are
giving small business the opportunity to grow in our Golden Neighborhoods."
The state-sponsored Urban Enterprise Zone program began in Jersey City in 1985 as a
way to boost economic development and reduce the unemployment rate in the inner city.
Member businesses receive tax incentives such as being able to charge a reduced state
sales tax, exemption from sales-in-use tax, corporate tax credits, and a rebate from
unemployment benefits.
In addition to the 455 businesses that will now have UEZ eligibility, the revision of the
UEZ map also incorporated dozens of vacant properties for future development.
"The extension of these UEZ benefits will allow practically all of the city's businesses to
compete on an equal `playing field,' particularly those in the small community retail
conclaves," said Gene Nelson, the chief executive officer of the Jersey City EDC.
The current UEZ map modifications, which were approved by the Municipal Council in
November, is the fourth revision to the city's Urban Enterprise Zone districting. The last
revisions were made 12 years ago.
To find out if your business is eligible to enroll in the Urban Enterprise Zone, call the
Jersey City Economic Development Corporation, (201) 333-7797, ext. 25.
