JERSEY CITY—Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham and developers broke ground on a $22 million renovation/construction project that launches the city’s effort to formally develop an artists district during ceremonies today at 140 Bay Street.
Cunningham, project developer Vince Wilt (Green Tree construction inc.) and artists will be on hand to launch the first project of its type in the city’s history, where housing is being created specifically for the purpose of creating an artists work/live district. The project WALDO, an acronym for artists Work and Live District Overlay, is modeled after New York’s SoHo district. Cunningham, a long proponent of the idea despite scores who deemed it impossible, is thrilled to see it finally get underway.
“An artists work and live district has long been a dream for many artists throughout the region. We’ve worked hard for today to become a reality,” Cunningham said.
The building, constructed in 1890, is currently six stories. It will be modified with two additional floors and will included 5000 square feet of commercial real estate. Of the 69 units, six will be purchased by the city and set aside for low income artists. ///
