The main phone number for the City Government is 201-547-5000.
To report suspicious activity and nuisances (non-emergency), call the Police Department at 201-547-5477.
To report illegal parking during normal business hours, call the Parking Authority at 201-653-6969. Select ENFORCEMENT from the menu. Nights and weekends call the Police Department at 201-547-5477.

If you're just not sure what branch of City Government you should contact or if you have a pressing problem and just don't know what to do, then call the Mayor's Action Bureau at 201-547-4900. You can also call the Council Office, 201-547-5204, and ask to speak to your Councilperson's aide.

Many, but not all, offices are at City Hall, 280 Grove Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302.
Visit City Hall to:

  • Obtain copies of official documents
    (including copies of marriage licenses, but NOT birth certificates or death certificates)

  • Pay your taxes
    Tax Collector
  • Ask a property tax questions

    For parking permits, or to have a boot removed from a vehicle, contact the Parking Authority at 394 Central Avenue, Jersey City, NJ, 07307. The phone number is 201-653-6969. The parking permit application is available Online.

    Parking tickets are handled by the Violation Bureau at 365 Summit Avenue.

    The Municipal Court is located at 365 Summit Avenue (a few blocks south of Journal Square).

    Construction permits are issued at 30 Montgomery Street, Room 411 (Exchange Place).

    Dog licenses are issued by the Department of Health from 586 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07307. The dog license application is available Online. The phone number for Animal Control is 201-547-4888.

    Parking is very limited at City Hall, Police Headquarters (8 Erie Street) and at 30 Montgomery Street (Exchange Place). Plan on using public transportation or a pay parking lot.

    The City of Jersey City holds at tax lien auction several times a year. For more information, call the Tax Collector at 201-547-5000.

    From time-to-time, City-owned property is sold at auction. To learn more about that, call the City Real Estate Office at 201-547-5000.

    The Department Of Economic Opportunity at 121-125 Newark Avenue handles employment questions. The phone number there is 201-547-4623.

    United Water manages the Jersey City water supply.
